China Railway Materials Commercial Corporation (CRM) is a large-scale and state-owned enterprise under the supervision of State-owned Assets Supervision & Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC), which was restructured from the Materials Management Bureau of the Ministry of Railways. The history of CRM can date back to Tanggu Materials Division of China Railway Company founded in 1887. CRM is a large group corporation focusing on steel trade and integrated services in railway industry, targeting not only railway systems but also the whole society and the world. It is one of the largest steel trade multiple service providers and railway products exporters in China. CRM obtained sales revenue of 105.1 billion RMB in year 2009, ranked 57th among Top 500 Chinese enterprises, 25th among Top 500 Service Companies and 43rd among Largest 500 Enterprise Groups. The registered staff number reached 9269 by the end of 2009.
CRM’s core business are integrated service to the railway industry and steel trading, along which rapid growth is also witnessed in its logistics business, international business, leasing, minerals, industrial manufacturing, financial service and real estate business. As the major supplier of materials for railway operation and construction, CRM sources and supplies railway diesel oil, steel rails, materials for manufacturing and speed-up renovation of locomotives and cars, as well as spare-parts for maintenance. The majority of materials used in the railway construction since China was founded in 1949 have all been supplied by CRM, with great success largely attributed to CRM’s channels for supply and sales and a talent pool of professionals.
Based on its profound railway background, CRM strives to develop its steel trading business through centralized procurement and separate distribution, with the strategy of centralized development of upper stream resources, centralized allocation and centralized management. Stable strategic partnerships have been set up with major large scale steel plants in China. CRM’s steel sales network has covered all the first-tier cities and major steel markets. Sales volume for steel products stood at 15.88 million tons in the year of 2009, including 2.18 million tons of steel rails and 250,000 tons of wheels and axles, with a growth of 56% year on year. CRM is in the front rank in Chinese trading companies in terms of steel sales volume, while particularly notably being the largest distributer of steel rails, wheels and H shape steels in China.
What’s more, CRM is a certified distributer of coal and iron ore, which creates an organic link among coal mines, railway lines, ports, shipping and power plants, giving CRM the capacity to source and supply coal in a large volume.
Currently, CRM has 109 above third level branches in large and medium sized cities in China. The head office has been leading its subsidiaries and branch companies in building a nationwide service network, sound materials guarantee system and information management network, with 45 distribution centers totaling 820,000 square meters and 110 dedicated railway lines of 87 kilometers.
